Scope

Routine Maintenance by United Energy (UE) identified a dangerous external MSB which posed significant risk of internal cabinetry deteriorating and coming in contact with the live busbars. The removal and replacement of a 2,500amp MSB was required with fast turnaround times and minimal disruptions to campus operations.

Methodology

MEM successfully secured an open market quote and directly engaged a custom switchboard manufacturer to design and construct a durable MSB using 3mm marine grade aluminium with a steel internal cubicle. Once a date was set with the client, we coordinated with UE, Mondo, crane operators, and electrical inspectors. Following UE's confirmation of isolation and our own testing, we dismantled the existing main switchboard. With the assistance of the crane truck operator, we then removed the old MSB and installed the new one. After positioning the new MSB, our team reconnected and secured 4 sets of 630mm incoming mains cables, 3 sets of 630mm outgoing cables to nearby buildings, and 2 sets of 240mm XLPE cables to other nearby buildings. Once cables were secured, Mondo installed & commissioned new meters and CTs. The Electrical Inspector conducted tests, confirming readiness for re-energisation. UE completed their inspection and re-energised the MSB. Final tasks included labelling the board and reinstating main isolators in affected buildings, ensuring all systems were operational.

Outcomes

Thorough planning and Indepth communications with all stakeholders and suppliers were key to ensuring a seamless MSB changeover, which was completed within one day, resulting in minimal disruptions to our clients' operations.
